Terrific, Group 2!

On Thursday, group 2 began teaching their direct instruction lesson.  For their lesson, they had very unique systems for their classroom management.  First, they went over the classroom rules by going over the students' social studies swag.  They used the word swag as an acronym to go over what was expected of the students during the class time.  I thought this element of their lesson was very creative.  Next, to manage the students' behavior, they had their swag dollar system to go along with their social studies swag acronym.  For this system, each group earns "swag dollars" and their goal is to earn at least 25 swag dollars at the end of each lesson.  The students seemed to be very excited about this system, and I thought it was very cool also.  The only thing about this that I would recommend to this group is to make sure that they keep up with it. I understand that it is difficult to remember to give the groups their swag dollars since there is so much going on, but this is what is going to keep the students on track and focused throughout the lesson.

After group 2 went over their introduction, the pre-assessed the students using a word art.  I love word arts! They are cool to look at and the students are able to find words in the picture that they recognize and the teachers can go over them. After the pre-assessment, group 2 went into their development.  The development for this group was good! The teachers were very confident with their material and everyone spoke loud for all the students to hear.  At the beginning of the development, there was a little confusion about the note sheet because it was not explained to the students.  There was also a lot of information for the students to fill in on their note sheet so, it took them a long time to finish during each slide.  It would have been helpful if the teachers made sure throughout the entire lesson that the students were keeping up and got everything written down.  Another aspect that I really enjoyed during this groups development was their use of a variety of review questions.  They did not only use straightforward questions, but they used true or false, multiple choice, matching, and even had the students turning and talking and sharing their answers.  This great use of review allowed the students to answer the questions in different ways.

Group 2's development ran a little long so, when it came to guided practice there was not much time left.  However, group 2 had an excellent idea for their guided practice.  Each student had a term or definition that was hung around their chair, and when it was time they were it around their neck.  When prompted, the students had to quietly find their matching definition to the term. Some of the teachers sitting in the back had to help since there was not enough student in the class for everything to get used.  At the end, group 2 began to review the different terms with the students, but they did not finish going over them because they needed to get to their independent practice.

For the independent practice, group 2 had the students write a tweet as George Washington about what they learned.  I thought the idea of the students "tweeting" was very creative since these students are very modern and are up to date with the use of smartphones and social media, but I wish the students had more time to finish!

Overall, group 2's direct instruction went well! Hopefully next Tuesday, their inquiry lesson goes well; I am looking forward to it!

Group 2's inquiry lesson was on Tuesday, and it went well. They had the students exploring Lewis and Clark's journey by going through stations!  It was a very cool lesson that kept the students up and moving. As the students went to each station, they were also exploring what Lewis and Clark got to explore.  Amid some technical difficulties, group 2 did a great job working around that to keep the lesson going.  My favorite part of their inquiry lesson was the independent practice, the students wrote a journal entry on stained paper.  This was very creative and made it so that the students were actually writing on paper for the 1800's.

Next was there cooperative learning lesson.  I really loved the idea that group 2 had for their cooperative learning activity.  The students were given candidates from the lesson they were taught and they had to create a poster for their candidate.  Their poster had to include a catch phrase, a diss phrase, and the students got to write a rap.  For this lesson, group  was very organized. They had their groups pre-assigned with group jobs pre-assigned in them. They also had what candidate each group would be creating the poster for preassigned.  This lesson was very fun and the students really enjoyed it.

Overall, group  did a very good job! Besides time and classroom management, they were knowledgeable about what they were teaching and planned engaging activities for the students. Now, it is on to group 3!
