Welcome to Fifth Grade!
Last Thursday, we finally began fieldwork in a fifth grade classroom at Bishop Dunn! I was excited to see that I have worked with this teacher before. Last Spring semester, I worked with two fifth grade students during Language Arts Methods.
When we arrived to the classroom, the students were still at lunch so, this gave us time to set up our activities we had for the students. All of the fieldwork groups in Social Studies Methods picked a different activity to play with all of the students to not only get to know them, but to pre - assess their knowledge. We also had a chance to pre-assess them by giving them a quick test using google forms to see what they knew about everyone's topic.
From what I saw, everyone had really great activities. Group 3 played Jenga with the students, group 4 tossed a ball with all of the students, and group 2 had a board game set up for all he students to play. My group did something similar to group 2's board game. Our board game was called "Hopping Through History". The students would spin a digital spinner, which was on my iPad. Once the digital spinner landed on a number, they would move the number of spaces the spinner landed on (we had numbers 1-4 on the spinner). When one of the students landed on a square, they had to answer questions that my group wrote on cards that we made. The pink squares were all about me questions (the students answered questions about them), the blue triangles were 7 second challenge questions (the students had 7 seconds to complete the challenge that was on the card, for example we used: clap your hands and tell us what the three-fifths compromise did!), the orange circles were
questions about our history topic which is forming a new nation, and the question marks were questions that the students could ask us! To the right is what our game cards looked like. They were face down and the students would pick up the card that matched the shape they landed on.
The fifth graders enjoyed our game. I love getting to know the students we are going to be working with and engaging with them so we can not only learn about all of the things that they know about social studies. This class is going to be a great experience.
My group is group 1 so, we are kicking of Social Studies Methods' fieldwork and teaching first! I am nervous yet excited at the same time. We have planned a great direct instruction lesson to teach the students first; it is all about the formation of our nation. We will then be teaching two more lessons (inquiry and cooperative learning) which will include all of the things we taught them. Stay tuned for my blogs about my group's teaching experience!
P.S. I will add pictures of our first day of fieldwork when they are posted!
